It’s International Women’s Day. So what better time to write about friendship; support and helping those not as fortunate as ourselves?

With the exception of my one and only guy, the amazing Simon Denegri, the most important people in my life have always been women*.

My two sisters. Friends from Perth (home); Uni; travel; work and life. Each and every one of them brilliant people and friends for life.

They’ve been there during the good times and the bad. We’ve had ups and downs. But every one of them is on my list of people I know I could call at 3am if I need them. They’ve never let me down.

So not only do we have great friendships, we’ve also been lucky enough to be born at a time and in a country where we’ve got freedom, safety and choices that must surely be the envy of many women around the world.

Imagine not having the right to vote. To drive a car. Access to free education. Not being able to go out - or do pretty much anything - without the permission or chaperoning of a man? We really do know how lucky we are. Oh we do.

So we’ve got the friendships. The freedom. And I know each of these women is totally supportive of others less fortunate than themselves, and goes out of their way to help in whatever way they can.**

That said we don’t often find it easy to ask for help for ourselves. But we should. Because it’s good for us and the people round about us.

But if you don’t need help today could you consider who might, and how to offer that? I’m thinking about it right now and there’s one person I can definitely reach out to, and I hope I’ll be able to do something useful to help and support her.

Have a great international women’s day.

*(in alphabetical order) Alex; Ally; Angie; Caroline; Claire; Clare; Dot; Elaine (ET); Eimear; Jackie; Jaqui; Kate; Kirsteen; Lisa; Marie-C; Mandy; Mel; Sara; Sylvia. My stars.

**ET aka Elaine gets a second mention here today as she has put me up (and put up with me) for three nights this week when I was stranded in Edinburgh. No fuss. No hassle. Plenty of laughs. Thank you my friend.
