Ceilidhs, Leather & Goose Fat
For someone who for the bulk of the year leads the slightly bizarre life of the travelling trainer/coach/conference speaker one of the luxuries that the Christmas break will bring, and that I suspect many of you reading this may take for granted, is the chance to sleep in my own bed for a couple of weeks rather than a variety of hotel ones! And of course the chance to spend more time with my wife and kids is something I absolutely love about the Christmas holidays.
Christmas in the Fleming family will be spent, as it has been for many years now, on the west coast of Scotland in a beautiful little village nestling on the edge of a gorgeous sea loch. My mum, dad and brother will rent a house near to us and we’ll all get together loads for walks, cycles, beers in the little local pub and of course a vastly over-indulgent Christmas feast at our house. I’ll be on cooking duties (which I love) – roast tatties are my speciality (goose fat and a really hot oven are key).
If the weather is good and the roads are dry then the old FJ1200 (a dinosaur of a motorbike which I’ve had for 20 years and which I never intend to sell – as it took me and my wife, in a time before children, all round France and over the Pyrenees) will get a blast up the lochside (almost certainly with my now 14 year old son Sandy on the back – he loves it).
Hogmanay will involve a ceilidh in the village hall and on New Year’s day (if the head’s not too sore) the Craignish Boat Club has a sail up the loch and I might just don the wetsuit and go for it.
Oh and if I can manage to wrestle my new work i-Pad off Sandy and Julia then I might spend a bit of time working out how the heck it all works and downloading yet more Apps.
For me it’ll be all about time with my family and re-charging the batteries ready to hit the ground running first week in January. And as I’m in the very fortunate position of absolutely loving my work, I cant wait!
Have a great Christmas everyone and see you in 2012.
